The Mercedes-AMG C63 could be set to receive a bigger engine after the disappointment of the four-cylinder powertrain.

Mercedes surprised many when it launched a four-cylinder C63, and heavy discounts for that model suggest that it has been quite a tough sell for the German manufacturer.

Yet despite worries about the powertrain, it looks like those who have longed for a bigger one will get something after all.

A recent interview with Mathias Geisen, Member of the Board of Management, indicated a larger engine is indeed on the way for the Mercedes car.

The smaller-engine Mercedes-AMG C63 has been a tough sell

Mercedes has not released official sales figures for the 2.0-liter hybrid four-cylinder AMG C63.

However, a quick search online reveals there are heavy discounts on the car.

This very much suggests that the German manufacturer has struggled to convince customers that the car is worth the money.

In fact, some officials at the company have said they have ‘lost some customers’ after the demise of the V8.

It does not appear that a V8 is on the way for the latest C63, even if a BMW M5 can trounce it in a drag race.

But something with six cylinders is potentially on the horizon, as the manufacturer looks to salvage something.

What the new engine for the C63 could be

At the moment, it sounds like an inline-six could be on the horizon, possibly a V6 too.

Whichever one materializes, turbocharging is also a distinct possibility.

Speaking to Auto Express in the UK, Geisen said, “We will have some options where we had a four-cylinder, which will also be available as a six-cylinder going forward.

“There may or may not be a hybrid; it might be pure ICE, maybe. We’ll let you know when we’re there.”

Due to the emissions rules in Europe, a form of electrification is likely to be included with this new engine.

We have already seen this with the C63 S E-Performance version of the car.

There have also been some rumors that the C63 name could be dropped for C53.

It has clearly not been an easy time for one of Mercedes’ flagship models.

Despite the difficulties, a larger engine could turn around the fortunes of a staple part of the AMG range.
