Mercedes-Benz once joined forces with the production team behind Avatar to create the achingly cool and super futuristic Mercedes Vision AVTR concept car.

The car came about thanks to a global partnership between the German marque and the Avatar team and was inspired by the hit movie.

The car is a true one-off and was built to demonstrate a new era of sustainable luxury.

Featuring an unusual ‘one bow’ design and special technology that is able to recognize the driver by their heartbeat and breathing, the Mercedes Vision AVTR might just be the coolest concept car out there.

We’re used to seeing all kinds of wonderful concept cars, such as the newly unveiled Lamborghini Manifesto or the fully autonomous Rolls-Royce 103EX

However, even amongst such unique and interesting vehicles, the Mercedes Vision AVTR manages to stand out.

For starters, the car looks as though it could have just dropped down to Earth from an alien planet.

But when you take a closer look, things get even more interesting.

Mercedes-Benz said the car was ‘designed both as an extension of the human body, and a tool to explore and communicate with the environment around us’.

And if you’re wondering what that means in real-life terms, then we’re talking about a car that can recognize the driver by their breathing and heartbeat and that features neat, reptilian-looking bionic scales on the back of the vehicle.

It’s also able to move sideways like a crab, thanks to its individually controlled wheels, and features lights designed to look like the seeds of the Tree of Souls from James Cameron’s movie.

The Mercedes Vision AVTR doesn’t feature a traditional steering wheel; instead, it is fitted with a multifunctional control element on the center console that brings the car to life with a single touch.

The Mercedes Vision AVTR is also super sustainable

As the Mercedes Vision AVTR was inspired by the movie Avatar, it stands to reason that it would be made using sustainable materials.

Inside, you’ll find vegan DINAMICA leather, which is made from recycled clothing and old plastic bottles. The Mercedes Vision AVTR features an all-electric powertrain and can be fully charged and ready to go in just 15 minutes.

Sadly, as the car was designed to be a concept, you won’t be able to get your hands on one – but you can take a closer look at it in the video above.
