The new Mercedes-Benz Vision Iconic Concept is halfway between a Batmobile and a concept car a supervillain would drive.

In a movie, Bruce Wayne would drive one, but The Joker also might.

But this is also a statement on the part of Mercedes.

This two-door supercar serves a very specific purpose.

A retro-futuristic icon worthy of a supervillain

For the Vision Iconic concept car, Mercedes-Benz used several classic models as inspiration.

The three-pointed standing star on the hood, for example, was something you’d have found in nearly every model in the 1990s and 2000s, but it’s gone now.

By contrast, the large illuminated grille at the front is a tribute to the W108, W111, and 600 Pullman, while the rear section is a homage to the 300 SL.

The interior looks like it was designed in the 50s.

By which we mean it looks like it could’ve been designed in 1950, but also in 2050.

You’ve got velour upholstery, an old-school dashboard with analog clocks, and a steering wheel like the yoke of a boat.

This is why Mercedes built this

The Batmobile-looking Vision Iconic is a statement.

Supercar manufacturers and luxury car makers are now building everything but two-door coupes.

SUVs, sedans, shooting brakes – you name it.

The Elettrica, Ferrari’s first EV, will almost certainly not be a supercar.

And the same goes for the Lanzador or even the AMG GT XX, which is a four-door sedan.

The German automaker introduced this concept to remind everyone that two-door supercars – not sedans – are designed to be the ultimate wall poster.

Although, to be fair, there’s a lot about this supercar that wouldn’t have been on anybody’s poster 20 years ago.

It’s electric, and it’s capable of Level-4 autonomy.

It’s also just a concept car.

Sadly, it’ll probably never make it to production.
