Michigan State Police has unveiled the very first all-electric vehicle in its fleet – a 2025 Ford Mustang Mach-E patrol car.
The force said the introduction of the vehicle will be an ‘exciting opportunity’ to discover how EVs perform on patrol.
The move comes after the Governor of Michigan Gretchen Whitmer signed a directive to make all state-owned vehicles electric by 2040.
Michigan cops also trialed a Chevrolet Blazer before settling on the Mustang Mach-E.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is the first EV for Michigan State Police
Several police forces across the US – and further afield – have introduced EVs into their fleets, including the South Pasadena Police Department, which rolled out 20 Teslas last summer, and Dubai Police General Command, which has its very own customized Cybertruck.
Now, Michigan State Police (MSP) is the latest to include an EV in its fleet with the introduction of the 2025 Ford Mustang Mach-E patrol car.
The EV will be assigned to the Michigan State Police State Security Operations Section and will be used by officers who specialize in general law enforcement and security services at state-owned and leased facilities in the Lansing area.
“This is an exciting opportunity for us to research, in real time, how a battery electric vehicle performs on patrol,” MSP director Colonel James F. Grady II, said in a statement.
The Mach-E is a record-breaking EV
The statement went on to note that MSP has actually been testing EVs since 2022, but until now has held off introducing an all-electric vehicle.
The force said the Ford Mustang Mach-E will give it a chance to ‘determine if there is potential for cost savings and broader applicability’ within its fleet.
As far as EVs go, the Ford Mustang Mach-E is an impressive choice.
In August last year, the Mach-E set a new Guinness World Record for the longest journey by an EV on a single charge.
It traveled 916.74km (569.64 miles) on a single charge, earning itself a spot in the record books.
The EV can do 0-60mph (0-96km/h) in just 3.3 seconds and can do the quarter mile in 11.8 seconds.
