Bugatti might build the fastest cars on the planet, but this little Volkswagen Lupo just stole some of that thunder.

Originally designed as Volkswagen’s smallest car, the Lupo is a humble city hatchback sold in the late 1990s.

Topping out at 123HP with a modest 1.6-liter engine in the hot hatch GTI edition, which is respectable for its size.

However, way back in 2019, some mad lads decided they needed to transform a Lupo into a monster with more power than a Bugatti.

The tiny car in question has been completely transformed by DOP Motorsport, a Romanian tuning shop.

They took the Lupo’s tiny engine, and replaced it with something far more menacing: a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder.

The engine, which was retrieved from a Golf R, was then tuned to make 900HP, which is pretty wild.

For reference, the Ford Mustang GTD that became the fastest American car around the Nürburgring only has around 800HP.

However, they weren’t finished.

Behind the front seats, where you might expect a backseat, is another Golf R engine, which is identical to the first, and also tuned to 900HP.

This means the humble Volkswagen Lupo now has two engines, bringing the total horsepower to 1,800.

For comparison, a Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+, which is the world’s fastest car, has a measly 1,578 horsepower.

A video posted by Drag Media UK shows this monster in action.

The Lupo is not easy to control, squirming under its own power, and veering left when it takes off.

Still, in one of its best quarter-mile runs, the Lupo clocked a 9.22-second pass at 161MPH

That’s quicker than many modern supercars.

While the car clearly needs better control and traction, it’s still an amazing feat, considering a 1,800HP Volkswagen Lupo doesn’t make any sense.

For something that’s built to carry groceries, it’s quite crazy that it managed to smoke a Bugatti on paper.

Perhaps if the team tried even harder, they might be able to get the tiny Volkswagen to pump out more than 2,000 horsepower, like the Hennessey Venom F5.
