It turns out that many Gen Z drivers are deathly afraid of pumping gas alone, due to a condition that some has coined ‘gas station anxiety’.
According to new research, a majority of young drivers experience serious gas station anxiety, making the once-routine refueling stop a nerve-wracking ordeal.
Forget rising prices, as what’s really stressing out younger motorists is the pressure of pulling up to a pump, choosing the right fuel, and not looking clueless while doing it.
For a generation that grew up ordering everything online and avoiding phone calls, the petrol station might just be the final frontier of adulting.

Many younger drivers ask others to help them
The study, conducted by online car retailer Cazoo, surveyed 2,000 UK motorists and found that 39 percent of all drivers are afraid of pumping gas alone.
Among drivers aged 18 to 24, that figure soars to a whopping 62 percent.
This means nearly two-thirds of Gen Z drivers admit they’re scared of filling up their own cars.

Turns out that while many are worried about gas prices today, Gen Z drivers are facing a completely different problem.
Many young drivers worry about making mistakes in public, like parking too far from the pump, picking the wrong fuel type, or fumbling with the nozzle.
Apparently, the struggle doesn’t end there.
Hygiene concerns, long queues, and fear of being judged by other drivers also contribute to their gas station anxiety.
As a result, many younger motorists simply avoid refueling altogether.
Half of the respondents even admitted that they let their tank run ‘dangerously low’, just to delay the inevitable stop at the station.
Even worse, one in four have actually run out of gas on the road.
The research also uncovered how dependent younger drivers can be when it comes to simple car tasks.
More than half of all drivers have asked a friend or family member to fill up for them, but among Gen Z that jumps to almost two-thirds.
At least if they lived in this particular US state, that won’t be a problem, given that pumping gas alone isn’t actually allowed.
Gen Z drivers also face a phobia of parking
This isn’t the first time Cazoo has found Gen Z struggling with everyday car challenges.
A previous survey revealed that nearly all drivers aged 18 to 28 felt anxious about parallel or reverse parking.

Two-thirds of the respondents then admitted that they’ve asked someone else to do it for them.
Of course, there are some pretty good methods to learn how to parallel park basically any car, but if all else fails, you can always buy a self-parking car from BYD instead.
The next time you see a young driver nervously circling a gas station, try not to honk.
They’re just trying to survive adulthood, one pump at a time.
