The quirky world of car-sitting has officially landed in New York, and yes, it really does involve someone sitting in people’s cars for money.

At 29, Sydney Charlet has turned what sounds like a sitcom plot into a surprisingly lucrative side hustle.

Armed with nothing more than a smile, a smartphone, and a lot of free time, she’s made herself indispensable to stressed-out city drivers.

And business is booming so quickly that she’s already thinking about hiring staff.

Car-sitting might just be the ultimate New York side hustle

Charlet revealed in an interview with Good Morning America that she moved to New York from the West Coast after being laid off from her job.

Struggling to find a new path, she stumbled across a loophole in the city’s dreaded alternate-side parking rules.

Every week, drivers have to shuffle their cars for street sweeping or face hefty tickets.

Charlet soon realized that as long as someone is inside the car when the sweeper comes by, cops generally wave and move on, with no ticket required.

She began offering her services on TikTok: for a fraction of the cost of a parking fine, she’ll slide into your car, wait until the sweeper passes, and save you both the stress and the money.

The video racked up hundreds of thousands of views, and soon New Yorkers were lining up to book her.

One commenter called it the ‘ultimate side hustle’, while another called her ‘the parking fairy godmother the city didn’t know it needed.’

In fact, if you ever find yourself parking next to a fire hydrant, you should really consider contacting Charlet for her services, lest you find out the consequences the hard way.

She has more potential employees than customers

Sydney’s routine is simple but oddly effective.

She climbs into a stranger’s car, smiles at the passing officer, and waits it out.

Sometimes she chats with the owner, sometimes she just scrolls through her phone, and sometimes she simply waves ‘good morning’ to the cop and enjoys the quiet.

What sounds dull at first quickly becomes easy money in a city where everyone is short on time.

Less than a month in, Charlet is earning hundreds of dollars a day.

She’s even fielding résumés from people who want to join her budding ‘army of Big Apple automobile occupiers.’

In fact, she says she has more potential employees than customers at the moment.

In a city where space is scarce and tickets are pricey, car-sitting might just be the most New York job of all.

Second only, perhaps, to this New York man, who makes $100,000 a year reporting traffic offenses as his full-time job.
