When you see our nightmare quest to pass a driving test, it will make you, as a driver with a car, count your blessings.
We are not exaggerating when we say the UK driving test booking system has the power to turn rational, fully grown adults into bleary-eyed competitors willing to set alarms before 6am just for a fighting chance at a test slot.
We found ourselves rolling out of bed at 5.49am on a Monday because that is when the weekly ritual begins, with a fresh batch of appointments released six months in advance to thousands of hopeful learners.
And while the actual driving test is supposed to be the nerve-racking part, lately it feels like securing the booking requires Olympic-level endurance before we have even got behind the wheel.

The nightmare driving test quest begins before sunrise
At exactly 6am, the floodgates open and the UK Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) releases new driving practical test slots, which means if you are quick and lucky, you might just grab a date somewhere near home.
This would make life a million times easier instead of trekking to the outskirts of London, which is the current situation we find ourselves in.
We logged on, battled our way through a captcha that seemed designed to test patience more than humanity, and were greeted by a queue of 7,756 people standing virtually ahead of us.
As the numbers slowly ticked down and fueled by a much-needed cup of tea at 6.02 am, our optimism began to rise along with our heart rate.

Getting into the triple digits in that queue feels like surviving the opening round of The Hunger Games.
But here is the twist in this particular nightmare quest.
After switching off our router overnight to force an IP reset, clearing our cache, changing browsers, trying multiple devices, and even abandoning Wi-Fi for a personal hotspot, we finally reached the front of the queue.
We were then informed that we had been flagged as a bot after all that drama.

Every driver should count their blessings
As dramatic as our Monday morning saga sounds, it is part of a much wider post-COVID backlog.
The almost unusable DVSA system has left learners battling long waiting times, limited availability, and reports of automated systems snapping up slots the second they appear.
The government has pledged to recruit more examiners and release additional tests each month, but for now, the process still feels like a weekly lottery that needs an early alarm, thick skin, and caffeine.

The most surreal part is that passing the driving test is no longer the scariest hurdle, because first you have to win the right to sit it at all.
And after watching a precious slot vanish in seconds, the pressure to succeed becomes enormous.
To make things even more intense, from March 31, 2026, learners will only be allowed to change their driving test appointment twice, after which any further attempt to shuffle dates means canceling the whole thing and starting all over again.
So, if you already have the most sought-after pink license tucked safely in your wallet, take a moment to appreciate it.
Check out the nightmare quest unfold in the video above, but for now, see you next Monday at 5:49 am.
