US eVTOL company Pivotal has announced a partnership with a North Carolina healthcare agency, which will see paramedics flying its ultralight aircraft.
There’s been plenty of buzz about electric vertical takeoff and landing (or eVTOL) aircraft lately.
Big names like Joby and Archer Aviation have been showcasing futuristic-looking flying taxis amid claims that they could completely revolutionize the travel industry.
But it’s not just travel that could benefit from the impressive new tech, with paramedics in North Carolina set to take to the skies in eVTOL for the first time.

The new project is the first of its kind and marks a major eVTOL milestone
The new project is the first of its kind, and will see Pivotal join forces with Hyde County and Code Blue Resources to create and establish a ‘scalable emergency medical response model using eVTOLs’.
Until now, eVTOLs have largely been seen and used in the private sector, but this new initiative will see them being sent out to administer aid and medical care in potentially tricky situations.

“Flight-trained paramedics serve as volunteer pilots, deploying Pivotal eVTOL aircraft to provide rapid, advanced medical care directly at high-acuity emergency scenes when conditions are appropriate,” a press release explained.
The project will see Pivotal providing its Helix eVTOLs and all necessary training, while Code Blue Resources will take care of the medical side of things.
Pivotal hasn’t announced how many paramedics, or its eVTOLs, will be involved in the new project, but it’s been hailed as a major milestone for the industry.
“Creating this program with Hyde County and Code Blue Resources marks a definitive milestone for advanced air mobility. For the first time, eVTOL technology is being deployed to support active public safety operations,” CEO of Pivotal Ken Karklin said.
“The initial phase is designed to build the framework for sustained Airmobile Emergency Services response, and we expect it could deliver measurable life-saving benefits from the start.”

Paramedics flying the Pivotal aircraft won’t need a pilot’s license
Although Pivotal eVTOLs don’t require a pilot’s license to fly, paramedics will be given ‘comprehensive flight training’ before they can take off.
Unlike conventional aircraft, Pivotal’s Helix doesn’t need large runways or launchpads, meaning they can take off quickly and easily, making them a great choice in an emergency situation.
And, because they can fly, paramedics won’t need to worry about finding themselves caught in traffic on the way to an emergency.

“Pivotal’s eVTOL technology represents a possible leap forward for our public safety operations. Its ability to deploy rapidly, without runways or specialized infrastructure, opens entirely new possibilities for situational awareness, operational reach, and scalable response,” Emergency Medical Services, Hyde County, Director Chief Brook Cox said.
“For EMS in rural regions like the Outer Coastal Plain, this is not just a tool—it’s a cost-efficient platform that fundamentally expands how we approach emergency management.”
Alongside paramedics, Hyde County has said it also intends to deploy eVTOLs to support law enforcement, fire, and emergency management operations.
