Man with 2.85 million-mile Mercedes 240 D had difficult decision to make when Merc found out about his car

The owner of this high-mileage Mercedes, a 1976 Mercedes 240 D, had a very difficult decision to make when the company found out about his car.

The good news was that Mercedes was prepared to give him a free car.

But there was a huge catch.

And his answer might surprise you.

The story behind this high-mileage Mercedes 240 D

According to the Greek City Times, the car in question was bought used by the guy who set the record in 1981.

A taxi driver in Greece bought this 1976 Mercedes 240 D when it was almost new – it was a five-year-old car at that point – and then proceeded to put 2.85 million miles under its tires.

That’s equivalent to 4.58 million kilometers.

At some point, the German automaker got wind of this, and the company came up with an offer.

They offered the driver, Gregorios Sachinidis, a free and brand-spanking new C-Class, but, of course, he had to give up his prized Mercedes in order to get it.

Interestingly, he actually said yes, and his 240 D car ended up in a Mercedes museum.

The owner of another record-breaking car had a different idea

Irv Gordon’s Volvo P1800 is arguably the most famous high-mileage car in the world.

Gordon drove it for over three million miles, and when he reached three million miles, he got in touch with Volvo and made them a cheeky offer.

As he explained in 2016 during an interview with New York Post, he offered it to Volvo for $1 a mile.

Unsurprisingly, Volvo said no.

But the company was still super nice to him.

In fact, Volvo gifted Irv a new car back in 1987 to celebrate the first million-mile mark.

He ended up driving 450,000 miles on that new 780 Coupe before selling it.
