This man lives above his own private airport and flies to and from work every day.
Meet Joe Sobczak, a 68-year-old pilot who lives above a hangar at the Pine Mountain Lake Airport in Groveland California.

Joe flew fighter jets in the US Air Force before deciding to slow down a bit and work as a test pilot for a US airline.
If Joe were to drive to work, his commute would be three hours.
Instead, Joe flies, cutting his commute down to just 45 minutes.

And it’s the only lifestyle he can imagine living.
“It’s incredibly quiet and peaceful up here in the mountains,” he told CNBC Make It.
When Joe first started looking for a place to live in Groveland, he said it was “really all about the hangar”.
And the hangar Joe landed on was a spacious 3,600 square feet.
And above it, was his home.

Inside the hangar, among other aircraft, Joe has a $175,000 Beechcraft T-34 Mentor airplane.
Joe said he bought the aircraft after it was converted from military use to civilian use.
The former Air Force pilot lives and breathes flying.
He says it’s given him the opportunity to live in one of the most beautiful places in the world while still maintaining his job.

Joe says his 45 minutes flight into work and back costs about $120 in jet fuel.
“The airplane burns fuel faster than my car does, but I get there a lot quicker too,” he said.
“So the cost of fuel is really about the same, whether I drive or fly.”
He also keeps costs down by doing most of the maintenance on his plane himself.

Joe’s not the only one to live above his own private hangar.
In fact, there’s a community of pilots who call the Pine Mountain Lake Airport home.
“For pilots, it’s a great community just for flying… it’s a great place to live,” he said.
