Young US pilot stuns everyone by revealing the shocking hidden costs of owning a small Cessna plane

Operating his beloved 1968 Cessna 150, young pilot Drew has been chasing his dreams through the clouds, dropping in at restaurants with a landing strip in Hawaii and the Bahamas – but there are hidden costs you might not expect.

Documenting his airborne passions on social media, Drew (Fly Me to the Fun) has conquered some of the hardest airports in the world and uses his platform to showcase the beautiful views along the way.

The young pilot personally finds his hobby pretty affordable.

So much so that he broke down the costs of owning a Cessna plane, but shocked fans by revealing one massive fee that nearly set him back as much as he paid for the plane itself.

Young pilot details yearly costs of owning a Cessna plane

Unlike private jets – some of which cost $40,000 a year in fuel alone – smaller planes like those from Cessna are much cheaper to keep active.

In a video posted on their TikTok account, Drew and his partner Lanie revealed that the 1968 Cessna 150 they fly costs $34,000 to own, and opened up about their annual fees.

Straight away, before you can even get airborne, aviators need to pay $2,000 for their annual inspection. But this is their biggest recurring expense.

From there on, the two explained that they spent $200 on new tires, $400 on a new battery, $40 on a spark plug, and $30 on an oil filter.

From there on, it was only fuel that added to their spending, which came to $2,840 for the year.

These low fees are significantly lower than what others have experienced, as one owner of a $150,000 Piper Archer spent more on their insurance alone.

But for the Fly Me to the Fun duo, their only major expense came the year prior, when the plane needed a full engine overhaul. And an expensive one at that.

This hidden major cost had viewers stunned

While the plan is quite easy to keep in good condition, the engine needs to be completely rebuilt much more frequently than you might imagine.

“Every engine’s different, but for mine, it’s every 2,000 hours or 12 years, whichever comes first,” he said. 

Considering his Cessna is from 1968, this would likely be its fifth or sixth engine overhaul, showing the extensive management you need to give these planes.

But this came around for him last year, and it costs a small fortune.

“They took everything apart, cleaned it, and replaced a bunch of different parts.”

The overhaul set him back $23,0000 – nearly two-thirds of the cost of the plane itself.

Another pilot claimed that there are more expenses than what was explained here, such as hangar costs.

But for maintenance alone, the costs of owning a Cessna plane will make your eyes water.
