Watch as Pontiac Firebird Trans Am is whittled out of wood

The Pontiac Firebird Trans Am is up there with the most classic American sports cars of all time.

Built to compete against the incredibly popular Ford Mustang, when it launched in 1967 it was an immediate hit, and remained in production for 35 years and four generations.

Today, the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am may all be but a distant memory, however, its legacy lives on in this fantastic handcrafted wooden car.

We spotted this fascinating video on the ‘Awesome Woodcraft’ YouTube channel.

Using a block of wood, the carving artist handcrafts a scale model of the iconic Pontiac Firebird Trans Am.

The attention to detail that goes into making the wooden car look like the real thing is outstanding.

The biggest number of Firebirds sold in 1979, when 211,454 models sold.

The folks from Awesome Woodcraft have created a wooden model of the Amercian muscle car from that time period.

As well as looking remarkably like the real thing, the model also comes with moving parts.

The wheels are working, as is the suspension front and back.

The steering’s working as well, while the hood and doors all open.

The Pontiac Trans Am even features the ‘Firebird’ decal etched into its hood.

As they say, the devil’s in the detail, and that’s exactly what this artist has paid particular attention to.

Considerable effort has been made to ensure the engine bay looks like the real thing, with added rubber hoses, and a “Shaker” hood scoop.

A T-top roof, split lower grilles, and four headlight pods have all been included to make the wooden toy look just like the real thing.

It’s not clear if Awesome Woodcraft is selling the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am or if you can have another vehicle commissioned by these creative people.

When you’ve got a spare couple of minutes, be sure to check out their YouTube channel to see the other amazing creations they’ve made.
