The Porsche 911 GT3 has become the fastest manual car to complete a lap around the Nürburgring, beating an American favorite by a whole 10 seconds.

The Nürburgring track in Germany is the ultimate test of a sports car.

But typically, manual cars tend to get left in the dust, with records being held by some magnificent automatic race cars.

Porsche, however, loves to steal away records on its doorstep, and now it has nabbed the fastest manual accolade away from Dodge thanks to a magnificent lap.

Porsche 911 GT3 smashes manual Nürburgring lap record

The Nürburgring lap has often been used as a barometer to measure the fastest cars in the world.

But while German brands Porsche and Mercedes have been monopolising the charts on their native track, as far as manual cars were concerned, it was a Dodge Viper that held the record.

That was until April 17, when Porsche sent out a modified 911 GT3 and obliterated the time.

The Porsche 911 GT3 is already an expensive beast, coming in at around $210,000. But thanks to the Weissach Package, for another $20k, you can add a manual gearbox and really look to push the car to its limits.

Adding a stick-shift gearbox is just the start, though, as it also brings together carbon fibre anti-roll bars, bonnet, and roof panel, magnesium alloy wheels, and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tyres made specifically for racing.

With that in mind, and brand ambassador and former racing driver, Jorg Bergmeister at the wheel, the stick-shift 911 GT3 scorched around the track to set an impressive 6:56.294 time.

To put it into perspective, that beats any American car ever and topped the Dodge Viper’s record by 10 seconds.

Only a handful of cars have completed it in under seven minutes, with the Mercedes-AMG One (6:29.090) being the fastest of all cars with a 14-second gap ahead of the Porsche 911 GT2 RS.

Porsche will likely be eyeing the top spot with an automatic 911 GT3, too, having flip-flopped with Mercedes to hold the record.

But others are also lining up track attempts, such as the Estrema Fulminea, which wants to be the fastest EV around the Nürburgring.

Of course, Porsche also holds that record with the Taycan Turbo S.
