It’s not just horsepower – there’s actually psychology behind our supercar love.

Sure, they look stunning, they move like lightning, and they feel good to drive.

These all feel like blatantly obvious reasons why many of us love supercars.

But according to a psychologist, there’s a lot more to it than that.

The psychology behind supercar love

If you look at a luxury car, many thoughts will spring to mind.

One will obviously be to admire the car’s looks, but then your mind might go to the owner.

You might wonder how much they spent, how successful they must be, among other speculations.

For many people, these cars are the pinnacle of achievement.

This is certainly the view of Dr. Michael T. Larkin, a psychologist specializing in consumer behavior.

“Owning a sports car often represents personal accomplishment and a sense of independence,” he said.

“It visibly reflects ambition, milestones reached, and a commitment to living life on one’s terms.”

It’s not just Dr. Larkin analyzing the psychological profiles of supercar buyers.

YouTube channel threepiece.us also did a deep dive into the inner workings of car enthusiasts.

There were various aspects to look at – whether it be a sense of identity, a need for speed, or emotional ties.

“Go to any car meet on a weekend, and you’ll see the real-life version of social media ‘likes’ in action,” the host said.

“People swarm around each other’s rides, complimenting paint jobs, wheels, or how low the car is without tearing the bumper off.

“Why does everyone gather in parking lots at odd hours just to stand around and talk about, well, cars?

“The answer’s pretty simple – humans are social animals.

“Social identity theory tells us that we get part of our sense of self from the groups that we belong to.

“Car culture is a perfect example of this.”

There’s no denying it – supercars scratch a psychological itch for many people.

Supercars are more than just vehicles

Supercars carry a lot of significance for many people.

In the car world, there are many chances to display and see cars of significant importance.

From the Goodwood Festival of Speed to the Nürburgring track, there are opportunities available all over the world to view vehicles,  but it also brings something else to the table.

The chance to meet others who share the same passion.

Whether it’s an underground garage filled with 1,000 cars or a DeLorean leaving Gen Z baffled, there’s a lot of community spirit to go around.
