Richard Hammond has fallen head over heels for the Mustang Dark Horse; so much so that after testing it, he went out and immediately bought one.

The television personality, known for his love of all things fast and mechanical, said he couldn’t resist adding Ford’s most ferocious pony to his personal stable.

He goes on to reveal a few main reasons for why he fell in love with the Dark Horse.

And in true Hammond fashion, he’s not just parking it in his garage either.

Why was he so impressed with the Mustang Dark Horse?

While testing the car for DriveTribe, Richard Hammond said the car felt even better once the cameras were off and he could just drive it home.

“When you’re filming, you’re a bit self-conscious, a bit analytical,” he said.

“Whereas just driving it home, it was pure experience.”

With the pressure of performance gone, he could truly appreciate how sharp and responsive the car felt.

In fact, he described it as ‘more like a track car that’s stepped onto a road’.

For Hammond, the Mustang’s appeal runs deep.

Born in 1969, the same year as his cherished 390 GT, he’s been a lifelong fan of the muscle car icon.

The new Dark Horse, with its MagneRide suspension, sharpened steering, and tech-packed 5.0-litre Coyote V8, still embodies the same ‘blue-collar’ spirit that made the original so beloved.

However, the new tech gives it a refined edge.

He described it as the perfect mix of brute force and everyday usability: a car that was thrilling when the road opened up, but still a joy to drive through traffic.

He also revealed that he’d already made one essential adjustment, by cranking the exhaust up to its loudest setting.

That, he said, was a non-negotiable.

Whether burbling through town or starting it up outside the house, the rumble of the V8 is part of the Mustang experience.

Two very different Mustangs

Hammond’s long history with the brand makes his new addition even more meaningful.

He still owns his original 1969 390 GT in Highland Green (the same spec as Steve McQueen’s car in Bullitt).

Parked alongside it, the Mustang Dark Horse feels like a full-circle moment.

These are two generations of Mustangs from two very different eras, yet both hold the same charm.

As Richard Hammond puts it, ‘it’s a car for being out in the real world’.

And for a man who’s driven just about everything, that’s high praise indeed.
