Rivian confirms R2 is coming to Europe 'for sure' and reveals tentative timeframe

Rivian has finally confirmed that yes, the Rivian R2 is indeed on its way to Europe.

There’s no confirmed date yet, but there is a tentative timeframe.

This is good news, even though it highlights an ongoing change in the industry.

And that change is something Europeans should know about.

The Rivian R2 is coming to the Old Continent

While there were rumors that the Rivian R2 – the R1’s ‘little brother’ – was on its way to Europe, now we have official confirmation from Rivian.

Speaking to Supercar Blondie, Rivian’s Senior Communications Manager Tanya Miller said that the R2 was ‘for sure’ about to enter Europe.

“Yes, R2 will definitely be coming to Europe for sure,” she told Supercar Blondie.

“We are focused on the US market launch, and Europe will follow shortly after. Exact details to come,” she said.

The ‘Launch Edition’ Rivian R2 is already out – with deliveries rolling out as we speak – which means that, with a bit of luck, the European debut is months – not years – away.

But this begs a question.

Is the European market losing traction?

For the longest time, the car world was very Europe-centric, with the other two key hubs being the US and Japan.

But then things changed quite rapidly, possibly accelerated by the Dieselgate debacle.

Now, European buyers often get the same stuff that American, Chinese, and Japanese buyers get either much later, or not at all.

Several key sports cars sold in the US and Japan, for example, aren’t officially available in Europe, almost always due to emissions restrictions.

Ironically, the same goes for Chinese cars – the hottest products on the market right now.

The list of flagship Chinese cars that aren’t (yet) available in Europe is quite long and it includes the YangWang U9, all Xiaomi cars, and the Denza Z Convertible.

In theory, models like the Xiaomi SU7 and the Denza Z Convertible will eventually reach Europe.

However, launch dates remain vague, and initial rollouts typically prioritize major markets like Germany and the UK, leaving smaller EU countries waiting.

Considering the direction the market is going, this could get ‘worse’ before it gets better.
