Driver completely confused after spotting road sign they'd never seen before and asks what it actually means

When this driver spotted this mysterious road sign, they were left baffled – and took to the internet to find out what it meant.

If you’ve spent enough time on the roads, you grow accustomed to the various road signs and their meaning.

But every now and then, you’ll come across one that will leave you scratching your head.

And this chessboard sign is a real headscratcher, there’s no doubt about that.

This driver was left confused by a mysterious road sign

Road signs vary in appearance around the world, but usually serve the same purpose.

They’ll tell you the speed limit of the area, indicate right of way, you get the idea.

But this sign really left a driver stumped.

It looked like a chessboard or a race flag, with black and white squares covering the surface.

On Reddit, the driver asked for some input on what the sign meant.

“I literally had to look up this sign have never seen it before. Has anyone seen this elsewhere?” they asked.

It should be noted that this was a road sign in the UK.

But if people in the UK are still not quite sure what it means, what is the answer?

What does this sign mean?

For as much bad press as the internet gets, it is undoubtedly good for one thing – getting answers to questions you really want answering.

And Reddit was able to provide that in abundance.

“It basically means a sharp deviation/warning. It’s meant to highlight that the road doesn’t continue straight, and it’s a giveway,” one person said.

“They don’t put up a sign like that until several cars have flown straight across the T junction and into the field beyond,” another remarked.

“Not strange at all. It’s been at the junction for years. It’s to catch your attention in what appears to be a long straight road, and alert you that there is, in fact, a junction for you to stop at,” added a third.

This isn’t the only UK road sign to leave people at a loss

This isn’t the only road sign that’s caused some confusion over the years.

There’s one that drivers are convinced that 99 percent of people don’t know the true meaning of.

The circular sign has a white backdrop and a single black stripe diagonally through the middle at a 45-degree angle.

The sign tells UK drivers that the ‘National Speed Limit’ is in force on that stretch of road.

This can vary depending on the road, but usually, when this sign is shown, it’s 60mph.

Then there’s this ultra-rare sign that you better hope you won’t be seeing any time soon.

And to think that this could have all been avoided if we’d gone along with the universal road signs that the UN wanted.
