In a bid to protest against the authorities in his country, this man built the shortest highway in the world, but it’s likely a car will never drive on it.
Just as EV infrastructure hasn’t quite caught up in many areas of the US, road infrastructure isn’t as strong as it could be elsewhere in the world.
One man, Stefan Mandachi, thinks that the roads in his home country need improving.
So, he built one himself, and standing at just one meter long, it’s been recorded as the shortest highway in the world.

Where is the shortest highway in the world?
Shakespeare’s words of “Though she be but little, she is fierce!” certainly ring true in the car world, as we often see some miraculous vehicles being made just to show off engineering excellence.
But despite being tiny, the shortest highway in the world makes a very fierce statement.
Businessman Mandachi laid out the one-meter stretch of tarmac in 2019 and it cost him around $6,000 to construct.
The highway was used to kickstart the ‘Romania wants motorways’ campaign, where Mandachi called on the authorities to improve the infrastructure.
“We are the poorest region in Europe, and I want highways here, in Moldova, in my region. Here, in Suceava, in my city!,” he said.

Back in 2019, Romania ranked as one of the lowest countries in Europe for motorway access, despite having the 12th-largest area on the continent.
The campaign was followed by a 15-minute process where workers down-tooled across the country, as they believed improved road infrastructure would vastly reduce delivery and export costs.
The shortest highway in the world was met with a chorus of cheers and gained massive national media attention.
While no car will ever drive on it, it could be a great collab for the Guinness World Record holder who has the smallest bike – he’d get some good laps done.
Wacky road records
This particular road record is rather long-standing compared to some more recently erected structures. The shortest road in the world was built in 2019, but the tallest bridge, well, that was opened just last week.
As for the longest road, well, that record goes to the Pan-American highway that measures some 20,000 miles long from the north of Alaska to southern Argentina.
Some other short-stacks have made records too, with the smallest international bridge being marginally longer than the Romanian highway, with a 9.75m highway connecting New York and Canada in one man’s back garden.

This record might never be beaten, either, given that nobody else has need for an actual one-meter road.
