The slingshot maneuver has people divided, with many debating whether it should even be legal for drivers to do it.

While many things are agreed upon when it comes to driving, there are still plenty of things that split opinion.

And this particular move isn’t illegal, but it sure is controversial.

But what’s at the root of this dispute?

What is the slingshot maneuver, and why is it proving to be so controversial?

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of this road debate, let’s define what the slingshot maneuver is.

It’s a move used by some people to get ahead of traffic, particularly when other drivers are queuing to get onto a roundabout.

By ‘slingshotting’ themselves into the opposite lane, the slingshotter gets themselves onto the roundabout and merges into the traffic effortlessly, having skipped the queue.

It’s not illegal, but in the UK, you can get three points on your license for doing so.

And, of course, virtually everyone else on the road will think you’re a massive jerk and will be secretly rooting for you to step on a piece of Lego in the near future.

But now, more and more people are debating whether or not this move should be made illegal.

The debate is raging over on Reddit

Some people had a fairly casual attitude about the practice.

“Not illegal. Frowned upon? Possibly. But who cares, if it gets you to where you need to be a bit quicker, go for it.

“Only thing is, it really relies on not everyone doing it. I do it sometimes if I’m feeling mischievous. I also tut if I don’t do it, but someone else does it,” one Redditor admitted.

“Rightly or wrongly, I used to do this all the time. I worked as a courier – same day and tenders – and all I can say is ‘time is money’,” another said.

“I used to do this every day on my commute into and out of work, I don’t know why you wouldn’t,” a third slingshotter commented.

But there were people who were pushing back against this viewpoint.

“Bad behaviour without consequence leads to increased bad behaviour,” one person wrote.

“It is lane misuse and inconsiderate driving, if you have a dashcam and can record it, send the vid into op snap.”

But ultimately, the overwhelming verdict seemed to be ‘It’s wrong, but I still do it’.

Seems like a bit of a ‘Do as I say, not as I do’ situation, right?

This isn’t the first time road conduct has sparked a debate online.

That’s certainly what happened when this driver shared how she applies her handbrake.

And the less said about the ongoing Waze and Google Maps debate, the better.
