Sony has announced a much more powerful – and expensive – version of the PlayStation 5.

Rumors surrounding a beefed-up PS5 have swirled for some time, and now the tech giant has confirmed that an advanced console – called the PS5 Pro is set to launch.

The new console will comes with advanced graphics meaning you’ll be able to play even the most demanding of games at higher frame rates.

It will also feature AI-driven upscaling known as ‘PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution’ that makes use of AI technology to provide crystal clear images with an extraordinary amount of detail. Sounds good, right?

What’s different about the PlayStation 5 Pro?

Sony said the new console is the ‘next step’ in the evolution of gaming and promises the ‘most advanced and innovative console hardware to date’.

What this looks like in real terms, is an upgraded graphics card with 67% more compute units than the standard PS5, which will allow for rendering speeds up to 45% faster.

There’s also more advanced ‘ray tracing’ that provides more dynamic reflection and refraction of light.

This allows the rays to be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current PS5 console.

Pretty flash, right?

Outwardly, Sony has kept the console looking pretty much identical to the standard PS5 – and it’s compatible with all the currently available PS5 accessories and add ons, such as the PlayStation VR2 and PlayStation Portal.

How much does it cost and when is it out?

Sony has confirmed that the PS5 Pro will be released just in time to be added to your Christmas list, with a launch day of Thursday November 7.

It’s not just the graphics card that has had a boost – the price has also been given an increase with Sony putting a $699.99 price tag on the console.

Included in the price is a 2TB SSD, a DualSense wireless controller, and a copy of Astro’s Playroom pre-installed.

The PS5 Pro will be sold as available as a disc-less console but can be used with the current Disc Drive for PS5, which is sold separately.

If you’re keen to get your hands on one, then pre-orders will open on September 26, 2024.
