Plug‑in hybrids, aka PHEVs, are a type of EV that drivers across the world use every day, but they soon could become extinct, according to a spokesperson from Stellantis.

From Toyota to Jeep and Chrysler, many brands have previously adopted the dual tech to provide drivers with higher range levels

In recent months, we’ve seen demand for EVs skyrocket due to a variety of factors, including environmental benefits and money-saving perks.

Reports have suggested that from this model year, Stellantis will slowly but surely phase out hybrids that can be charged via a plug, in favor of growing demand for another type of energy supply.

Plug‑in hybrids – here’s what you need to know

Hybrids come in many different shapes and sizes, and one of the most common types tends to be plug‑in hybrids, aka PHEVs.

But what exactly is a plug-in hybrid, you ask?

Well, it basically means that a car has both an electric motor and a gas engine with the ability to be plugged in to charge and provide more range.

This means that both electric and gas power are used to travel longer distances, and have all the benefits of an EV without the worry of charging.

Many brands and car manufacturers have applied the technology of plug-in hybrids, but as 2026 begins, there is a clear trend that implies that EVs are more popular.

From Tesla to BMW, many brands offer fully EV options with huge demand driving sales.

Now, though, brands underneath the Stellantis umbrella are set for a big shakeup.

Stellantis has revealed the future of PHEVs

Exclusively talking to The Drive, a spokesperson for the brand told the publication about demand for plug‑in hybrids – and it’s not looking pretty.

Stellantis continually evaluates its product strategy to meet evolving customer needs and regulatory requirements.

“With customer demand shifting, Stellantis will phase out plug‑in hybrid (PHEV) programs in North America beginning with the 2026 model year, and focus on more competitive electrified solutions, including hybrid and range‑extended vehicles where they best meet customer needs.”

The spokesperson continued to explain that this new shake-up backs the brand’s dedication to providing efficient options.

This means that Stellantis will continue to produce cars that embody a range of engines from internal combustion to hybrid range extending, and of course EV.

So, the saying that as one door closes, another one opens certainly rings true here – or was that the gas flap?
