A study has found that Florida is the most dangerous state for pedestrians.
The study, carried out by Spartacus Law Firm, identified America’s most dangerous states for pedestrians and cyclists.
Not only was Florida identified as the most dangerous, but the study also named nine more to round out the top 10 most dangerous states across the United States.
And some of those on the list might surprise you.

Florida is the most dangerous state for pedestrians
The study, carried out by Spartacus Law Firm, took several factors into account, including fatalities, walking score, road quality, and road safety.
Florida ranked highest, with 16.9 fatalities per 100,000 residents.
It didn’t have the highest fatalities overall, but had the highest Danger Score at 99.

The Danger Score took all factors into account.
The state with the highest fatality rate was New Mexico, but that only came fourth on the list on account of its danger score.
Second place on the list was Louisiana and third was Arizona.
The results in full, measured by Danger Score, from most dangerous:
- Florida – 99
- Louisiana – 91
- Arizona – 87
- New Mexico – 85
- South Carolina – 82
- Mississippi – 81
- Nevada – 72
- Georgia – 70
- Oklahoma – 69
- Alabama – 68
Why have these states ranked so highly?
In the case of Florida, the study highlights poor road quality.
For many other states, it was a lack of infrastructure that contributed to its ranking.
Poor road design was another huge factor, especially when it came to crosswalks and bike lanes.

Chandon Alexander, the principal of Spartacus Law Firm, commented on the study’s findings.
“States like Florida and Louisiana are paying the price for road designs that encourage high-speed traffic through areas where people need to walk and bike, while lacking the protected bike lanes, crosswalks, and traffic calming measures that have proven effective elsewhere,” he said.
“Cities that have invested in proper cycling infrastructure and pedestrian-friendly design have seen dramatic reductions in fatalities, proving that safer streets are achievable.”
What state governments are doing to improve road safety
There’s been a renewed effort to address dangerous roads throughout the US.
Florida has been particularly stringent on speeding, thanks to its super speeder law.

Under this super speeder law, drivers caught driving more than 50 miles per hour over the speed limit, or anyone who exceeds 100mph, can end up in jail.
It’s so strict that one man sold his Lamborghini in response.
There’s a great variety in driving laws across all 50 states.
Some are harsher than others – in Tennessee, teenagers risk losing their license altogether if they’re caught bullying.
Regardless of which state you live in – or indeed, which country – road safety is important.
And that goes for wherever you’re a driver or a pedestrian.
