The Sultan of Brunei is well known as one of the world’s most prolific car collectors, but few realize there’s a hidden story behind how some of the most secretive vehicles in his collection were apparently revealed.

From Ferrari to McLaren, the royal garage is said to boast an extraordinary lineup with a truly eye-watering price tag attached.

At the start of the new millennium, a bold photographer reportedly took on the risky task of revealing 28 cars in the collection.

Here’s what we know about the Sultan’s incredible vehicles.

The Sultan of Brunei’s impressive car collection

Any avid car collector will be well-versed in the story of the Sultan of Brunei and his huge collection of exclusive cars.

From having $300,000,000 worth of McLaren F1s and four Bugattis, there aren’t many luxury brands that the Sultan of Brunei hasn’t owned.

However impressive they actually are, it seems that many weren’t ever meant to be seen by the public, with some reports stating that they are even manned by armed personnel.

That all changed in 2001, though, when a photographer seemingly revealed a selection of some of the most valuable cars owned by the Sultan of Brunei.

We’re talking about the exclusive ‘Black Room’ section of the garage.

Bentley Spotting reports that of those 28 cars uncovered, 19 were Bentleys, five were Ferrari, three were Aston Martins and there was also a McLaren F1.

Almost all of those are said to be reportedly built for the Sultan, too.

Impressive right?

Of course, since 2001, the car collection could have grown, with other reports explaining that a vast number of pictures are available in a Google Drive folder.

Leaked pictures are available on Instagram too, including the account brunei_cars_2001/ with the green Bentley and red Java, particularly taking our fancy.

How the photos were taken

Since 2001, several theories have circulated online about how the leak actually took place.

From tales of a photographer taking a complex route to get into the collection, to a falling out which prompted the photos to be released, no one truly knows what happened.

Other sources say that an auction photographer was given permission.

Whatever the reality, it’s one of the most extraordinary car collections the world has ever seen.
