Australia has introduced a new rule that changes the game for supercar drivers.
If you own or drive a high-powered car like a Lamborghini or Ferrari in Australia, you now need a special license plate and driving license.
But why does Australia think supercars need their own license, and what does this mean for drivers?
The authorities believe that getting behind the wheel of a supercar is different to that of a normal car – and well, they’re not wrong.

New driving license for supercars in Australia
Since December 1, 2024, drivers of ultra high-powered vehicles (UHPVs) have been required to hold a ‘U’ class license.
These vehicles are defined as having a power-to-weight ratio of 276 kilowatts per tonne or more and a gross vehicle mass of up to 4.5 tonnes.

The rule mostly applies to supercars, hypercars, and other powerful rides, ensuring people who drive them are appropriately skilled.
To make it feasible for car owners, the authority suggested using the EzyReg app, where the drivers can check if their vehicle is classified as a UHPV or not.
It’s simple – just enter your car’s registration number and find out if you need the new license.
Getting the special license
To get this license, drivers just need to do an online course.
The course covers how to safely drive these powerful cars, highlights risks, and explains features like Electronic Stability Control and Automated Emergency Braking.
So what happens if Aussie drivers refuse to do the course?
Well, they’ll be pulled over and get a hefty fine, which is exactly what happened to this Lamborghini Huracan driver who was stopped by police in South Australia this week.
The new law is all about keeping everyone safe, especially with these ultra-fast cars becoming more common.
