This is the Switchblade flying car and it could be hitting our skies in a matter of weeks.

After a long 14 years in the making, the Samson Sky Switchblade has just been deemed safe by the Federal Aviation Administration.

This is exciting news for the small family-run company that’s been working on it tooth-and-nail since 2008.

And it’s exciting news for the rest of the world too.

The Switchblade is a hybrid electric-drive aircraft and has been built with all the extras you would expect in a supercar.

And it transitions from car to aircraft seamlessly.

When ready for takeoff, the wings unfurl from the body of the aircraft.

CHECK THIS OUT!

With two people, the pilot and one passenger, the aircraft can reach 4,877 meters (16,000 feet) and cruising speeds of 260kmh (160mph).

It’s also fitted with a parachute, just in case the unthinkable happens.

And once it lands, the aircraft transitions back into a car, with the wings folding back into the body of the vehicle.

You can then drive the Switchblade like a normal car all the way home.

Samson Sky says the Switchblade will retail for $170,000 when it hits the market.

And considering buyers will literally be able to fly over congested traffic, that’s a pretty good bang for your buck.

Buyers are eager too, because there are already 1,600 people on the reservation list

But if you want to fly one, you’ll need a double license – your driver’s license and private pilot certification.

How did the Switchblade flying car come to life?

The Switchblade is the brainchild of Sam Bousfield

“I could see that the future of transportation was in the air, but currently we are mostly on the ground,” he said.

“So I decided to develop something that seamlessly merged air and ground transportation.”

Bousfield says the Switchblade is “an impressive sports car and a first-rate airplane” all in one.

Following the FAA approval, Bousfield said the flying car was just weeks away from its inaugural flight.
