Using an air fryer over a conventional oven is becoming increasingly popular in many households across the globe, but it turns out that it may not be the most cost-effective option.
One financial expert has issued stark words of advice, and they may not be what you’d initially expect.
From the wattage of your air fryer to how much food you are actually cooking, there is a lot to factor into the equation.
The cost difference is mighty, and after one supplier revealed all, your cooking habits may change.

Why have air fryers risen in popularity?
The air fryer is now a standard kitchen device that we all use daily, but it hasn’t always been this way.
The air fryer first entered the electronics world in 2010, but started gaining popularity almost a decade later.
From big family dinners to quick snacks, the device is often thought to be cheaper to run than a standard, conventional oven.

The conventional oven usually runs on either gas or electricity, and with bills rising, it can end up costing far more than anticipated for some people.
Surprising figures have shown, though, that there are some scenarios where an air fryer isn’t actually cheaper than running a standard conventional oven.

Martin Lewis, famous for his tips on saving cash, even offered a warning on the price of running an air fryer versus a conventional oven.
The Money Saving Expert even revealed his ‘rule of thumb’.
He explained that he first finds the wattage of the appliance he is using before stating that 1,000 watts is a kilowatt.
Then works out that you pay around 34p – which is around $0.46 – per kilowatt hour, with ovens using a high wattage.
But, when using an oven for a big family meal, such as a Thanksgiving turkey, you’ll have lots of items in there for a couple of hours.
As the oven isn’t actually using all of the wattage at once, it usually heats up and then tops up that heat afterwards.
“But if you’ve got something small and simple in there…. that’s where the microwave and also the air fryers tend to come into their own because they’re better at cooking single objects,” he said.
So in general, air fryers are better for cooking single objects quickly, but for larger meals, the conventional oven may be the best option.

The real cost difference may surprise you compared to a conventional oven
Ultitita, an energy supplier across the pond, produced a ‘Power Price List’ which shows the real cost of running an appliance.
We should note here that prices obviously depend on the tariff each customer is on and usage levels.
According to the list, an air fryer costs £26.73 (around $36.21) per year, a gas oven £33.22 (around $45), and an electric oven £93.44 (around $126.57).

So, the list further proves that if you need to cook a few things at once, which will take a fair amount of time, an oven may be cheaper than an air fryer.
