Former robotaxi company Tensor is set to begin selling Level 4 autonomous Robocar to private customers in the next couple of years.

Driverless taxis have had a big year in the US, with the launch of Tesla’s Robotaxi service, and the continued growth of Waymo

But while autonomous taxi fleets are growing, it has not yet been possible to buy Level 4 autonomous vehicles.

However, that’s all set to change by 2027, with Tensor poised to start selling its Robocar in the US.

The Tensor Robocar is a Level 4 autonomous vehicle

Tensor was originally founded in 2016 under the name AutoX in the US, but later moved its operations to China, where it built up a fleet of more than 1,000 self-driving taxis

However, now the company is heading back to the US, and this time around it plans to sell its Tensor Robocar directly to private customers rather than robotaxi fleets.

“We’re introducing the world’s first personal Robocar, ushering in the era of AI-defined vehicles,” Tensor Chief Marketing Officer Amy Luca said back in August.

“This isn’t a car as we know it. It’s an embodied personal agent that moves you.”

The all-electric Robocar comes with an estimated range of 250 miles and is capable of fast charging from 10 percent to 80 percent in just 20 minutes.

It is a Level 4 autonomous vehicle, which means it is able to drive itself without the need for a safety driver behind the wheel, although it does still have a steering wheel and pedals, unlike the upcoming Cybercab from Tesla

This means that the car can either be driven as a normal vehicle or operate completely autonomously.

The EV has more than 100 sensors, including cameras, lidar, microphones, and ultrasonics.

It also has a smart system to keep its sensors clean, including 13 mini wipers and heating elements to stop fog or snow from blocking the sensors.

When will the car be landing in the US?

Tensor has said production of the autonomous vehicle will kick off later next year, with first deliveries expected for the United Arab Emirates a few months later.

According to Motortrend, US deliveries will start in early 2027, pending necessary regulatory approvals.

The company also has plans to roll out into Europe at a later date.

As yet, Tensor hasn’t revealed a price for the Robocar, but the company told Motortrend to expect ‘luxury pricing’.
