A Tesla driver was left shocked when he was handed a steep bill after driving over a nail, saying it’s ‘the worst thing’ about owning the EV.
Tesla’s warranty doesn’t cover tire damage, so if you’re in the unfortunate situation where you pop one, you’ll need to foot the bill.
One Tesla owner recently revealed that he managed to destroy one of his tires on his EV just a couple of months after getting it.
And he was hit with a hefty bill to replace it.

Although EVs often come with a higher price tag upfront, most Tesla drivers are quick to point out that they’re a lot cheaper to run than gas-powered cars, like this Tesla Model 3 owner who said he saved $800 in just four months, or this guy who says he’s saved around $20,000 in six years thanks to switching to a Model 3.
However, one unexpected expense you may not be aware of is the cost of a new tire if one of yours happens to need replacing.

This was recently highlighted in a clip from TikToker @charlie__chang who asked a fairly new Tesla owner what was ‘one of the worst things about owning a Tesla’.
The man told him that the EVs are ‘very heavy,’ which is great for safety, but added that that same weight can cause a headache if you happen to have an unexpected run-in with a nail.
“Being heavy, and if you’re in big cities, where construction nails… we’ve already lost a tire within the first two months with a nail,” he said.
“They’ll come out and change it, but there’s a fee so always check, because that’s the only thing that’s not under warranty.”
When asked how much it cost to replace his tire after driving over a nail, he revealed it was ‘$600’. Ouch.

Other Tesla owners have quoted similar prices over on Reddit, with one saying he was charged around $450 to replace a single tire on his Model Y and another saying he was billed $495.
What makes the tires so expensive?
There are a handful of factors that go some way to explaining why Tesla tires are expensive.
Firstly, the cars are heavy, so the tires are often made of stronger and more expensive rubber.
Alongside this, where you buy your tires from may impact price – you might be expected to pay a little more for tires bought through Tesla’s service network than via a third-party shop.
Finally, Teslas are often fitted with high-performance or low-noise tires, which usually cost a little more.
