The new Tesla Megafactory in Shanghai is being built as we speak.
This will be Tesla’s second megafactory, and potentially even larger than the first one.
And now, thanks to this high-resolution drone footage, we can get a better idea of just how large.

The video was filmed by a YouTuber who goes by WuWa and, based on what we’re seeing, it looks like this is still in the early stages of construction.
According to Tesla investor Sawyer Merritt, the new Megafactory is expected to generate at least $15 billion per year in revenue, and 10,000 Megapacks made each year.
For the record, a Megapack is a large-scale energy storage battery pack.
At this point, we should also probably take a moment to break down the differences between Tesla’s main factories.
Tesla still operates its first factory, the one in Fremont, California, which is used for both cars and battery components, but it is no longer used as the main base of operations.
This is because Tesla has been using the Gigafactory Texas as its new global headquarters since 2021.
In addition to the one in Texas, which is the one where the Cybertruck is made by the way, the company also operates four more Gigafactories.
There’s one in Shanghai, one in Berlin, Germany, and two more in the US – one in Nevada and another in New York.
Then there’s the only Tesla Megafactory – for now – which is located in Lathrop, California.
The difference between a Gigafactory and a Megafactory is the Gigafactory is used to make cars, whereas Tesla’s Megafactories only make components.
According to a report shared by EV news website CnEVPost, Megafactory Shanghai should be able to begin mass production in the first quarter of 2025.
Historically, Tesla usually delivers, but it often misses deadlines, so we’d take this report with a pinch of salt.
