Tesla Model 3 spotted driving through a completely flooded street and it's definitely not something you'd see every day

Forget your average rainy-day commute because this Tesla Model 3 had a much bigger obstacle to deal with – a flooded street.

Viral footage circulating online showed the EV driving through a street that had been completely swallowed by floodwater, with waves splashing around the car as it made its way through.

It’s hard to believe that something like this actually happened.

And, unsurprisingly, it was definitely not something you’d see every day.

The Tesla Model 3 drove straight through the flooded street

The video showed just how extreme flooding on a road had become, with a huge amount of water covering the road from one side to the other.

Several vehicles had already been making their way carefully through the flooded section, creating waves as they passed, the road itself was barely recognizable.

Then a Tesla Model 3 EV appeared.

The EV was filmed driving through the water, partially submerged as it steamed forward.

Water rippled and splashed around the car as it crossed the flooded section at surprising speed, making the Model 3 look like an amphibious vehicle.

It was a seriously unusual sight for what would normally be a completely ordinary stretch of road.

The footage also showed people standing along the roadside watching the vehicles attempt to get through, suggesting the flooding had turned the road into something of an impromptu spectacle, and alongside the caption ‘Tesla Model Shark’.

Teslas can handle water, but they aren’t boats

The Tesla Model 3 appeared to make it through the flooded section, but that doesn’t mean Teslas are designed to tackle deep water.

Tesla’s electric powertrain doesn’t have a conventional engine air intake, while its battery pack and other components are designed to be protected from water.

That can help explain why the Model 3 looked surprisingly unfazed as it moved through the flooded street.

But there’s a big difference between being protected from water and being designed to drive through a flood.

Floodwater can hide potholes, debris and other hazards, while deeper or moving water can cause a car to lose traction or become stranded. Water can also damage components such as brakes, wheel bearings and electrical systems.

So while the Model 3 in the video appeared to get through the flooded section with ease, it’s probably not something Tesla owners should be adding to their daily commute.

Still, the footage made for an incredible sight.
