Tesla unveiled a new stretched three-row Model Y with six seats, only available in China, as it comes from the company’s gigafactory in Shanghai: the Tesla Model YL.
This variant has been long-anticipated as it is set to make life a little easier for families who want more space or families that have a few more family members than most.
China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) revealed through filings that the new stretched three-row Model Y is called the Tesla Model YL.
To make space for the extra seats, the Model YL is considerably bigger than the standard five-seat version and will be officially rolled out in fall 2025.

Tesla unveiled a new stretched three-row Model Y and it’s great
Tesla’s first six-seater, three-row super long Model YL is being quietly rolled out, and it is a surprisingly big EV with lots of extra space.
The standard five-seat version is quite a bit smaller than the new Model YL because it has a long wheelbase in order to fit the new row in the back.
Tesla knows this variant has been long-anticipated, as it is set to make life a little easier for large families who need the extra space.

The extra-long version’s name was revealed through filings with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
It’s only available in China
In 2024 in China, the standard Tesla Model Y was the best-selling model, but by the first half of 2025, sales dropped, so it seems the Model YL was made to rebuild consumer interest.

There is a lot of competition in the EV sector locally, with BYD, Huawei, and Xiaomi creating high-quality electric vehicles, so if the launch of the long-wheelbase Tesla goes well, it will probably do well in the rest of the world.
Who knows whether the EV giant’s debut in the SUV world will be a flop or a success – only time will tell…
