Tesla now offers rentals in San Diego and Costa Mesa, and they come with free Supercharging and Full Self-Driving.

With the EV federal tax credit expiring back on September 30, carmakers have been scrambling to prevent a drop in sales.

And now it seems Tesla has come up with an interesting way to get cars off its forecourts and onto the road: by offering them up as daily rentals.

Not only will it give prospective buyers the chance to test out the car, but the carmaker will also offer a small discount if someone decides to buy.

Tesla now offers rentals for the first time ever

It’s been a bit of a bumpy year for Tesla. Back in July, figures revealed that sales of the Cybertruck had slumped to just 5,000.

But the carmaker appeared to bounce back in the third quarter, most likely due to the pending scrapping of the federal tax credit for electric vehicles

Last month, Tesla launched the Standard trim on the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y, making them the cheapest in the lineup.

And now, it seems the company has branched out into daily rentals in a bid to attract more customers.

All cars from the Tesla lineup, including the Cybertruck, can be rented, but only Premium trims are being offered.

Renters can pick up a Tesla directly from the dealership and must have the car between three and seven days.

While renting, you’ll get full use of the car, including features like Full Self-Driving, unlimited mileage, and free use of the Supercharger network.

However, there are a couple of caveats: you can’t take the car out of the state, and if you return it with less than 50 percent charge, you’ll be hit with a $30 fee.

Tesla now offers rentals in at least two Californian locations – San Diego and Costa Mesa – but is expected to introduce the offer to more cities, according to Electrek.

You can rent from across the full range, and here’s how much it’ll cost

Renters can take their pick from across the range, and it’s actually pretty cheap.

You can rent a Model 3 or Model Y for $60 per day, a Cybertruck for $75 per day, or a Model X or Model Y for $90 a day.

Not only that, but if a customer decides they like the EV so much that they want to buy one, they’ll be given $250 credit if they place the order within seven days of the rental.
