Tesla has quietly made some upgrades to the Model Y in the US, including a larger 16-inch screen and a black headliner.

The updates have been announced as Tesla reintroduces its seven-seater Model Y to its US lineup.

Tesla first introduced its seven-seater Model Y back in 2021, but it was short-lived.

Now, the EV-maker has relaunched the seven-seater option, and it comes along with some other updates.

Here’s what’s new on the Tesla Model Y for 2026

Tesla regularly makes changes and tweaks to its vehicles, including recently launching the Model 3 and Model Y Standard trims, the cheapest in its lineup.

This week, the carmaker announced that the Model Y Premium and Performance trims have had some upgrades, including a seven-seat option for the Premium, which costs an additional $2,500.

Unlike the Model Y L, which was released in China earlier this year, the updated seven-seater Model Y doesn’t feature a longer wheelbase.

Alongside the seven-seat option, the Model Y Premium will also come with an upgraded 16-inch touchscreen display in the front, a little larger than the old 15.4-inch screen, and the same size as the screen that was already in the Performance trim.

Both the Premium and Performance trims will now come with a black headliner in place of the often maligned grey one, and matte black badging will replace the chrome badges on the exterior.

The cheaper Standard trim remains unchanged, and will hold onto its 15.4-inch and grey headliner.

The tweaks to the US Model Y, come after similar upgrades were made to the Model Y available in China

Many Tesla fans had the same question

Tesla posted images of the new updates on X, but it seemed as though many followers had just one question in mind: ‘will the US ever get the Model Y L?’

“So, no Model Y L?” one asked.

“Please bring the Model YL to North America,” a second wrote.

“If model Y L is available why not bring it?” someone else questioned.

So, will the Model Y L come to the American market?

The Model Y L was released into the Chinese market back in July and pulled in almost 40,000 orders in a single day.

The wheelbase of the Y L is around six inches longer than the standard Y, allowing for a 2+2+2 seating configuration.

Shortly after its release, Tesla fans urged the company to launch the more spacious variant in the US, but it seems as though that might not ever happen

In a post on X back in August, one Tesla fan asked Elon Musk when the Model Y L would be released in America.

“This variant of the Model Y doesn’t start production in the US until the end of next year,” Musk responded

“Might not ever, given the advent of self-driving in America.”
