The Grappler is one of the most effective tools US traffic police use to stop car chases.
More departments across the United States have started adopting the system in recent years.
And its story can be traced back to a homemade prototype uploaded to YouTube in 2016.
By 2024, around 40-50 law enforcement agencies across the US were already using the Grappler Police Bumper, and more joined in 2025 and 2026.

How the unusual police tool stops a car chase in seconds
The device is called the Grappler Police Bumper, and it’s basically a net launcher mounted to the front of a patrol car.
When an officer activates it, a strong net shoots forward and wraps around the rear tire of the vehicle being chased.
Once the wheel gets tangled, the driver can’t keep speeding away.
Instead of spinning out or crashing, the car slows down and comes to a controlled stop.

The net can then be reloaded in just a few minutes, so the system is ready to go again.
In February 2026, officers in Splendora, Texas used the device to stop a driver who fled a traffic stop and reached speeds close to 90 miles per hour.
The Grappler Police Bumper caught the tire, the car stopped, and nobody involved was injured.
The Grappler started with a viral YouTube video
The idea came from inventor Leonard Stock, who built the first prototype in 2016.
He wanted to create a safer way to end dangerous police chases.
After building the device, he filmed it working and uploaded the video to YouTube.
The clip quickly spread online and caught the attention of law enforcement agencies.

By 2018, US Border Patrol had started using the Grappler, and other departments soon followed.
Before this system existed, police mainly relied on spike strips or the PIT maneuver, where an officer bumps the fleeing car to spin it out.
Those methods can work, but they can also be risky.
Compared with that, the Grappler offers a much calmer way to end a pursuit.
And for a tool that started as a garage project and a YouTube demo, it’s come a surprisingly long way.
