Pope Francis will soon travel in a new, fully electric Popemobile based on the Mercedes-Benz G580 EV.
This unique vehicle will be ready for the 2025 Jubilee, which happens once every 25 years in Rome.
Not only will this new Popemobile be a major step forward in eco-friendly travel for the Pontiff, it will also convey a strong message of sustainability.
The electric vehicle is designed to be both eco-friendly and fit for the Pope’s public appearances.

Pope to go electric with Popemobile
The vehicle was created as a collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and the Vatican.
It features an electric drivetrain adapted to work at the slow speeds required for the Pope’s travels.
This will help fulfill Pope Francis’ message of sustainable development, as expressed in ‘Laudato Si’ – a book written by the Pope himself.
Francis will be the first Pope ever to travel in a fully electric Mercedes-Benz Popemobile – a big moment for the Roman Catholic church.
The customizations done on the Mercedes-Benz G580 EV keep the Pope’s extensive duties in mind.
The rear of the vehicle has a special height-adjustable seat for the Pope, allowing him to move around and greet the crowd from different angles.
The roof can be removed, and a hardtop is available in case of bad weather.
The left rear door was rebuilt as a single piece, while the right rear door’s hinges were moved to the opposite side for easier access.
Mercedes-Benz has been making cars for the Church for a long time
This is not the first Popemobile made by Mercedes.
The brand has been a proud creator of these vehicles for almost 100 years, starting with a 1930 vehicle for Pope Pius XI.
Over the decades, various models have been used, with each one more advanced than the last.
Now, the new electric G580 EV will continue this long tradition of providing safe and luxurious transport for the Pope.
