The iconic Mercedes G-Class has gone all-electric, and if you – like everyone else – thought it would be called the EQG, it’s not.
The German brand rolled back the stage curtains to reveal the new Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology.
Putting aside the moniker – which doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue – the off-roader retains the core elements of our beloved G-Wagen.

Despite it being an EV, it looks nothing like one.
EVs usually have a design focused on efficiency, but Merc couldn’t do that to the G-Class.
Instead, you get a refreshed look with certain EQ Technology changes under the hood.
After going through several upgrades in its ICE configuration, the Geländewagen no longer has gas engines.
While that may disappoint some loyal fans, Mercedes assures everyone its primary focus remains offroad capabilities.
We already saw a teaser of this newly launched G580 a while ago, and it seems Merc hasn’t made many significant changes since then.
However, everyone thought Merc would call it the EQG.
You get a G580 with EQ Technology instead.
It houses four electric motors that produce a combined 579 horsepower output and a colossal 859 pound-feet of torque.
That’s an upgrade compared to its predecessor.
To put that into perspective, the new Mercedes G-Class can pull off an extra two horsepower and 232 lb-ft over the previous AMG G63.
Well, that’s what the instant torque perks of an electric motor give you — four of them, to be precise.
With that much power, it can still achieve 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 4.6 seconds.
Mercedes put a cap on the top speed at 112 mph, which is electronically limited.
But let’s be honest here — you’re not buying a G-Class because of its high top speed.
The new Mercedes G-Class will feature commendable off-road capability since it’s a true 4×4 because of its roots.
With that amount of torque, it can climb anywhere you want it to — without thinking twice.
Moreover, the German automaker spent extra time crafting this new G-Wagen, giving it a modern and comfortable interior.
The interior trim gets a more subtle appearance, with a steering wheel covered with Nappa-leather and ambient lighting.
G-Wagens from a decade back would look quite different from the new G580 from the inside.
However, it’s difficult for anyone to say the exterior looks any different from the iconic design we have all come to know over the years.
New LED lights surround the front grille, and the electric G-Class gets an exclusive ‘South Sea Blue Magno’ color.
The exclusive blue variant has a blue trim strip, a body-colored cargo box, blue brake calipers, and a new projection light message that says, ‘Stronger Than Time.’
