There’s nothing like a good customized license plate, but did you know that there were 891 rejected vanity plates in Ohio this year?
The state’s Bureau of Motor Vehicles has revealed a full list of denied custom plate requests, and it reads like an unfiltered stream of memes and in-jokes.
Drivers clearly leaned into slang, wordplay, and self-awareness when submitting their ideas, and some of them were just outright rude.
Not all of them made it anywhere near the road, and for good reason.

Ohio drivers who took vanity plates too far
Vanity plates for your cars are meant to be personal, but Ohio drivers took that freedom to the extreme.
The rejected list includes everything from mild self-mockery to phrases that are impossible to misunderstand once read out loud.
Plates like ‘LATE AF AGN’ were clearly meant to be funny, while ‘OLD FART’ appeared to be a tongue-in-cheek nod to age and attitude, and even those relatively tame ideas were denied under Ohio’s rules.
Things escalated quickly from there, and requests such as ‘MILFMBL’, ‘DE5 NUTS’, ‘STROKEN’, and ‘POOPSAC’ were all submitted and promptly rejected.

Others relied on immature humour or suggestive wording that only works because license plates limit characters.
Some plates were blocked because of abbreviations that could be read multiple ways, while others were rejected simply because officials felt the meaning was too obvious once decoded.
Even combinations that looked harmless at first glance were flagged if they carried a secondary meaning
Just like this man who had his very normal license plate rejected in Texas because the DMV thought he’d picked a rude one on purpose.
Why Ohio rejected the plates
Ohio’s Bureau of Motor Vehicles reviews every vanity plate request to ensure it follows state guidelines.
Plates are rejected if they include profanity, sexual references, discriminatory language, or anything that could be offensive or misleading.
Abbreviations are a major issue, so even when explicit words are shortened or disguised with numbers, the intent can still be clear enough to warrant a denial – context and interpretation matter just as much as spelling.

That explains why phrases like ‘LATE AF AGN’ and ‘OLD FART’ were blocked alongside far more obvious offenders, because if a phrase could reasonably offend someone or be read inappropriately, it is unlikely to pass.
With nearly 900 rejected submissions, the list shows just how far drivers are willing to go to stand out or commit to the bit.
While none of these plates will hit the road, there was no harm in trying to see how far the envelope can be pushed.
