A man checked the price of tires online, but was stunned after comparing the cost of the same tires, all in different places.
Posting on his TikTok account, content creator Bill (@bill_retired) made a video breaking down how we can avoid paying too much for tires.
He warned they are one area in which we, as consumers, can get ripped off, and that it is a bit of a minefield trying to find the right price.
His video gave us a good idea as to how that can happen, and with over 11,000 views, hopefully his advice has paid off for some people.

How Bill checks the price of tires to avoid overpaying
In the video, Bill said, “Tires are something else that can be a huge rip-off.”
But thankfully for us, his method of avoiding being ripped off is simple and effective.
First, he said to take a photo of them, zoom in on the tires, and identify the size.
Zooming in will reveal numbers, for example, 265 70 R 18, with the bigger numbers indicating the tire specifications.

Bill then said to go online and compare tire prices from different retailers with those numbers.
Then, he said to find a few local installers who also price everything out online.
The last step is to call them and make sure that the out-the-door cost is the same.
Tire prices can vary massively between shops.
Incredibly, prices for the exact same rubber can vary massively depending on where you buy it.
According to Bill, the shop he goes to the most is very competitive.
But across the street, they will charge more than double for the same rubber and the same service.
Bill said he has also had quotes ranging from $360-$400 as well as double at $800 or even more.
From this, it is easy to see why Bill said tires can be a massive rip-off.
Some outlets also state they have ‘free financing’, which could mean they will charge you more.
@bill_retired If you’re in the market for new tires, watch yourself out there. There are so many -basically- scam tire shops. Be sure to price your tires online, then get pricing from three local shops for the tire tires mounted and balanced. You will be shocked at the wide range of prices you will get. #cars ♬ original sound – Bill
Yet all of these places will offer more or less the same service.
So, as Bill has said, the messaging is clear.
Shop around, keep an eye out for the best price of tires, and don’t be sucked into overpaying when you don’t have to do so.
