Toyota sold more Tacomas than Corollas in Q1 showing a rise in pick-up truck popularity

The Toyota Tacoma outsold the Toyota Corolla in Q1 2025, and that really doesn’t happen very often.

The Corolla is one of the world’s best-selling cars, but sales have somewhat dwindled in recent times.

By contrast, the redesigned Tacoma is selling like hot cakes.

There are probably two reasons for this.

This is both good and bad news for Toyota

The Toyota Corolla is one of the best-selling vehicles in history.

It makes the top three of the world’s best-selling cars every year, and sometimes it even takes the crown.

But things aren’t going well on that front at the moment.

Toyota’s most popular sedans, including the Camry, the Crown and the Corolla, are all in the red.

This is probably down to two factors.

First, the current-gen Corolla is getting on a bit.

This design is about seven years old now, and it shows.

The second reason is probably that the SUV frenzy is cooling off a bit.

In general, when SUV sales go down, truck sales go up, and vice versa.

That’s definitely the case with the Toyota Tacoma.

In Q1, sales skyrocketed, especially in March, with a staggering increase of 188.2 percent.

What are the world’s best-selling vehicles?

The list of best-selling vehicles in the world looks totally different if you include pick-up trucks.

For example, the Ford F-150 is one of the world’s best-selling vehicles, despite the fact it is basically only sold in North America (with a few exceptions).

We can reasonably expect the list to change a lot in the coming years, chiefly due to the fact that Chinese automakers are growing at tremendous rates.

Xiaomi is already outselling Tesla in China, and Chinese brands are growing pretty much across the board, pretty much everywhere apart from the US for obvious political reasons.
