Man who bought 240 Land Rover Defenders in 2015 has made a huge profit on them as almost all are now sold

The most famous chapter of Twisted Automotive, a car company that specializes in Land Rover Defenders, began in 2015 in the most unusual of ways.

Back then, the founder took a huge risk by buying hundreds of new Land Rovers to modify them and resell them.

It was a huge investment, but it paid off.

As of 2026, he’s almost ‘out’ of Defenders.

It all started with a clever idea and a huge investment

Back in 2015, Charles Fawcett bought 240 Land Rover Defenders and put them in a ‘secret’ bunker.

His idea was simple, genius, and risky.

He decided to invest around £8 million – equivalent to over $10 million – to buy these Defenders, modify them and resell them individually.

Even this part wasn’t easy.

Fawcett has revealed on several occasions that even negotiating with Land Rover was incredibly difficult.

In a viral interview with Resto Revival ~ Car Stories, Fawcett revealed what happened.

For starters, there was a lot of back and forth, and Land Rover called the shots.

“[One day they called me and told me] there’s a policy change. If you don’t order them by the end of today, policy will be implemented on Monday. You won’t get any cars,” he said.

Land Rover even attempted to back out of the agreement.

“[Jaguar-Land Rover] basically said that we had a frustrated contract. I’d never heard that term before. They just didn’t want Twisted to have their cars,” he added.

After months of legal delays, he finally took delivery – though he mysteriously only received 239 units instead of the agreed-upon 240.

But in the end, his strategy and persistence paid off: Fawcett said he negotiated a 14.8 percent discount, which means each vehicle cost him nearly $10,000 less than the MSRP.

How Twisted Automotive can now sell Land Rover Defenders for hundreds of thousands of dollars

In the first few years, Twisted Automotive was selling vehicles for around $100,000 each.

The margin was pretty good, but not spectacular, and that’s because the company was still new, and was trying to build a reputation.

Now, some models Twisted sells cost as much $200,000 or even $300,000.

Between 2015 and 2024, as reported by LADbible, Fawcett said the company’s revenue exceeded £50 million – equivalent to around $65 million.

Only a few cars left

As of 2026, Twisted is almost out of Defenders.

Different sources cite different numbers, but, broadly speaking, it looks like they’re left with more than 10 but fewer than 20.

But Fawcett is never out of ideas: he’s apparently now thinking about doing the same with boats and – drum roll – Range Rovers.
