'Genius' who bought 240 Land Rover Defenders in 2015 revealed how much he made from them in the 'biggest risk of his career'

Twisted Automotive, a car company that specializes in Land Rover Defenders, was founded in the most unusual of ways.

The founder took a huge risk by purchasing hundreds of old Land Rovers to modify them and resell them.

It was a huge investment, but it paid off big time.

And now the founder is ready to share just exactly how big that payoff actually was.

How it all started

Back in 2015, Charles Fawcett bought 240 Land Rover Defenders, and put them in a ‘secret’ bunker.

His idea was simple but genius, and more importantly it was very risky.

He decided to spent around £8 million – equivalent to over $10 million – to buy these old Defenders, modify them and resell them individually.

He bought them directly from Land Rover and, in order to get a good deal out of this, he did two things.

First, he specifically went for a large number of vehicles, 240 units, and second, he opted for a model that had just been discontinued.

Fawcett said he negotiated a 14.8 percent discount, which means each vehicle cost him nearly $10,000 less than the MSRP.

How Twisted can now sell Land Rover Defenders for hundreds of thousands of dollars

In the first few years, Twisted Automotive was selling vehicles for around $100,000 each.

The margin was pretty good, but not spectacular, and that’s because the company was still new, and was trying to build a reputation.

Now, some models Twisted sells can cost as much $200,000 or even $300,000.

Between 2015 and 2024, as reported by LADbible, Fawcett said the company’s revenue exceeded £50 million – equivalent to around $65 million.

Interestingly, Fawcett is now apparently considering doing the same thing with boats.

We’re definitely going to stay tuned for that.
