What would you do if you came across the cheapest Cessna 150L you’d ever seen?

For one US-based YouTuber, the answer was simple: go check it out immediately.

The catch was that the plane hadn’t run in more than 10 years.

Somehow, that didn’t stop him from thinking it might still be a great deal.

Cheap planes are usually cheap for a reason

The Cessna 150L is usually seen as one of the most accessible entry points into aviation, although owning a plane is hardly ever cheap.

However, this particular example was far from flight-ready.

According to the listing, the control systems were disconnected, and parts like the wingtips and rudder cap were missing entirely.

Basically, it sounded more like a long-term headache than a quick win.

But that didn’t stop the purchase.

After recognizing the seller as a pilot he had previously worked with, YouTuber Gear Down made a snap decision.

Within hours, he had cash in hand and was on his way to the airport to secure the deal before anyone else could step in.

In his own words, sometimes the best opportunities come down to acting fast, even if it feels slightly reckless.

“You got to be ready to just shoot,” he said.

Getting the cheapest Cessna 150L to fly will be a challenge

Things took a turn the moment the inspection began.

When he popped open the engine cowling, he saw exactly what you might expect from a plane that had been sitting idle for years.

There was plenty of dust and grime, enough to evoke a sense of regret almost immediately.

“I’m terrified,” he admitted, staring into the engine bay.

Luckily for him, the situation didn’t turn out as bad as he thought.

After a quick check, the oil appeared clean, and the engine showed signs of life.

With a borrowed battery and a bit of persistence, he actually managed to get the engine to briefly run.

So far, so good.

Of course, just because the engine showed signs of life didn’t mean it was going to be easy.

The plane was missing a propeller logbook, and the lack of paperwork meant that he had to overhaul the propeller.

Still, the project was showing some real promise, which was good enough.

While restoring an aircraft is never cheap, the YouTuber was still really excited to get started.
