This Utah man took his Black Hawk helicopter for a spin for a very specific purpose: to save 34 wild horses.

YouTuber HeavyDSparks had received a last-minute call to head out and recover a herd of escaped horses.

These formerly wild horses had escaped from a rescue ranch and were running across rough desert and mountain terrain.

With his helicopter at the ready, HeavyDSparks and his team got to work rounding them up.

Taking a Black Hawk helicopter out to round up wild horses

HeavyDSparks has form for taking on missions out in the desert – remember these abandoned Air Force jets in Nevada?

And that’s not forgetting the time he retrieved this plane, which had sunk into the sand.

This time around, it was some wild horses that needed attending to.

Wild horses are a beautiful sight, no doubt, but their presence can cause some problems ecologically.

When their population grows too large, the land and surrounding wildlife can be negatively affected – prompting action from humans.

In this case, the 34 horses in question had escaped from a rescue ranch.

Because they were roaming through land on which they weren’t meant to be, the ranch was facing some penalties if they didn’t get them back.

That’s where HeavyDSparks and his Black Hawk helicopter came into the picture.

How did the mission go?

Have you ever heard the phrase ‘It was like herding cats’?

It’s used to describe a situation that is chaotic and tricky.

After watching this video, you might be inclined to think ‘cats’ could be switched out to ‘wild horses’ and it’d have the same effect.

The idea was to guide the horses towards a temporary corral, but it didn’t pan out quite like that.

Four horses were initially guided in, but nobody was on hand to secure them, so they escaped easily.

Ten horses were later captured without injury, which was a success.

A larger group was found and guided back towards the corral, but fading daylight, an icy river, and poor coordination led to them scattering.

All in all, only 12 horses were recovered.

Whilst HeavyDSparks and his team felt like they’d failed, they were assured that their help had made a huge difference.

And really, that’s a life lesson in of itself – you can only try your best in life.
