Volkswagen has entered a new era, as its first-ever vehicle made on its own architecture has gone into production.
Volkswagen announced its new zonal China Electronic Architecture (CEA) in 2024, explaining that it features a central computer.
The new zonal electronic architecture was developed with Chinese EV-maker Xpeng, and is being launched exclusively in China.
Now, the carmaker has confirmed that the first car to be built on the architecture – called the VW ID. UNYX 07 – is in production.

What will Volkswagen’s new zonal architecture do?
Chinese carmakers have introduced some interesting new launches lately, like the Xiaomi SU7, which counts Ford CEO Jim Farley among its fans, and the phenomenally fast-charging Han L and the Tang L from BYD.
So it makes sense that carmakers from outside the country are doing all they can to keep up.

Volkswagen has been quietly working on its ‘In China for China’ strategy for some time now, and has proudly announced it has hit a major milestone as production begins for its first zonal electronic architecture.
The marque says CEA will help to reduce the number of electronic control units in its vehicles by around 30 percent.
It also offers integration for advanced AI cockpit functions, China-specific driver assistance systems, and over-the-air updates for the lifetime of the car.
Volkswagen said the new architecture is scalable and can be used across all powertrain types, with a significant reduction in development time and costs.
“The China Electronic Architecture allows us to bring software-driven innovation to market at competitive cost and speed, across electric vehicles, hybrids, and combustion engine models,” VW’s CEO of Volkswagen Group China, Ralf Brandstatter, said.
“This is how we scale Intelligent Connected Vehicles in China – combining local speed with Volkswagen DNA.”

The Unyx 07 has been hailed as a ‘tech trailblazer’ and there’s more to come
The company said it took just 18 months to develop the completely new electronic architecture, marking the fastest project of its type by VW.
The first car to be built on the China Electronic Architecture has now rolled off the production line at Volkswagen’s Anhui facility.

The Uynx 07 mid-size sedan has been branded a ‘tech trailblazer for a new generation of Intelligent Connected Vehicles’ by the carmaker.
In a press release, VW confirmed that it is gearing up to present ‘four further vehicles’ from its joint ventures, all with the new architecture.
But as yet, it hasn’t shared any details on what these models will be, so it’s a case of watching this space.
