Volkswagen has said it will be making its EVs cheaper next year, as it revives the popular Polo nameplate for the new ID.Polo EV.
This week, Volkswagen announced a new naming strategy for its EVs that ‘transfers the familiar designations of combustion-engine models to its all-electric ID. family’.
So, the upcoming all-electric formerly known as ID.2 will now be known as the ID.Polo.
Alongside the new naming structure, VW has also promised cheaper EVs.

One of the biggest barriers when it comes to switching from gas-powered cars to electric ones is the price.
Motorists have called on carmakers, like Tesla, to make EVs cheaper.

And now it seems Volkswagen is happy to step up to the plate.
This week, the marque announced that it was introducing a new naming strategy when it came to its ID EV offerings by recycling old and well-loved nameplates, like the Polo.
Its concept car, which was known as ID. 2all, will be rebranded as the ID.Polo when it goes into production next year.
“Our model names are firmly anchored in people’s minds,” CEO of the Volkswagen brand Thomas Schäfer said.
“They stand for a strong brand and embody characteristics such as quality, timeless design, and technologies for all. That’s why we’re moving our well-known names into the future. The ID. Polo is just the beginning.”
The marque went on to announce that an ID.Cross, based on the T.Cross was also in the works and is expected to land late next year.
Alongside the new names, Volkswagen vowed to create cheaper EVs. “For Volkswagen, the premiere of the smaller and more compact vehicles in its electric family marks the start of a new era – it will make electric driving more affordable than ever, thanks to new models such as the ID. Polo and ID. Cross,” the brand said in a statement.
How cheap are we talking?
In Germany, the upcoming ID.Polo will cost under €25,000 (around $29,000) for the entry-level car, with higher-priced trims available.

Earlier this year, VW unveiled the smaller ID.Every1 is a concept vehicle that is set to enter production in 2027.
It seems likely that the ID.Every1 will undergo a name change before then to fit the new naming strategy, but at the unveiling, VW it would cost just €20,000 (around $23,000).
So, all in all, pretty darn cheap.
