Just as the electric vehicle infrastructure has been in rapid ascension, the same is being planned for hydrogen pump stations, and a district in Washington has just opened a revolutionary outpost where the fuel is nine times cheaper than that in California.

Throughout America, there are fewer than 100 hydrogen pump stations.

But with more cars being produced than ever before, which rely on this fuel, the need for more pumps is paramount.

Now, a district in Washington has just opened a new station, and it’s ridiculously cheap.

Hydrogen pump station opens in Washington, and its prices blow everyone out of the… air?

While many companies are fighting in the EVs arms race, Japanese manufacturer Toyota is taking a huge lead in hydrogen cars with the Mirai.

But the infrastructure, so far, is very California-centric, with the majority of hydrogen pumps being housed in the Golden State.

The charging prices aren’t coming cheap, though, having increased threefold since their release. So much so that Toyota is offering $15,000 in credits for the first three years of usage.

However, Douglas County PUD is mixing this up and has released a significantly cheaper station in Washington.

The first public hydrogen pump in the State has just been opened, and it costs $4 per kilogram.

That new metric might seem unconventional to us gasoline liter and electric kilowatt neanderthals, but all you need to know is that California charges an average of $36 per kilogram of hydrogen.

Nine times more.

It works out that this pump means the Toyota Mirai is actually just as affordable as running a 2025 Prius on gas, at roughly 18 miles per dollar.

Highlighted on Facebook, Douglas County PUD revealed that the charging time took around 15 minutes.

That is a lot slower than other chargers, but given that it is roughly in line with an EV, who wouldn’t mind a bit more waiting around if it costs nine times less than other pumps?

Is the Toyota Mirai setting a trend or mapping out a no-go zone?

There is no denying that the Toyota Mirai is the leading hydrogen road car in the world, but the jury is still out as to whether it can rival EVs and gasoline cars.

Of course, the fuel is cleaner to use, but it’s proving difficult to play with.

Instead, manufacturers look to be using the lighter fuel in hypercars, rather than road cars. Take the Alpine Alpenglow, for example.

Even Toyota has moved over to making a hydrogen-powered race car for Le Mans.

But East-Asian rivals Hyundai are also jumping on the bandwagon with the Nexo SUV, as it looks like the Toyota Mirai has proved to be a successful blueprint to follow.

It might take a lot of time for hydrogen pumps to catch up to the ever-increasing EV infrastructure, but it’s a promising sight for those who want a cleaner driving experience.
