A woman was left shocked after realizing just how much it costs to maintain a luxury car when she had to buy a new set of tires for her BMW XM.

The BMW XM SUV was introduced in 2022.

It’s only the second ever car developed entirely by the BMW M, the other being the iconic BMW M1

The 2025 BMW XM has a starting price of $161,675, but that can jump up to more than $200,000 depending on the trim and options.

A new set of tires for the BMW XM did not come cheap

It’s no surprise that owning a more expensive vehicle comes with more expensive running and maintenance costs – for example, an oil change on a Bugatti Veyron costs $25,000

Nonetheless, BMW MX owner Ryelee Steiling was left reeling after being told her SUV needed new tires less than a year after she bought it, and then was hit with another shock when she found out how much it would cost.

In a clip shared on TikTok under the handle @ryeleejase, she explained that she bought the car new in November last year, but by June was told that the tires had almost no tread left on them.

Steiling was confused about the car requiring new tires so soon after buying and enquired at the dealership, where she says she was simply told that it was a ‘really heavy car’.

The MX weighs in at around 6,000 pounds, making it slightly heavier than a lot of other SUVs its size.

With little choice, Steiling went ahead and got the new tires anyway.

And this was in she was in for a second big shock.

After being kitted out with four new tires, Steiling was handed a bill for $3,461.06.

“Thirty-five hundred dollars. That’s how much I just spent on tires for my car, $3,500. Are you kidding me?” she asked in the clip.

Why were the new tires so expensive?

For some context, if you wanted to get some medium 16 to 20-inch tires, you’d be looking at around $100 to $250 apiece, according to Discount Tires.

This goes up to $140-$170 each for large wheels measuring from 18 to 26 inches.

However, performance tires, which this BMW MX requires, can cost more. A lot more.

You can be looking at parting with up to $1,000 per tire, depending on the size.

Steiling’s story was enough to put some folks off ever buying a luxury vehicle.

“Expensive car, expensive problems,” one said.

‘Wow, that’s wild. People don’t understand the maintenance of these nice cars,” a second wrote.
