Waze is bringing a feature to its app that has been on Google Maps since 2022 – and this could be enough to make people rethink which navigation app is their go-to.
It’s long been a divisive topic – which do you prefer?
People have made the case for both sides, whilst some have switched from one to the other.
But now Waze is bringing a big change which might be enough to convert some Google Map users.

What new feature is coming to the navigation app?
This feature is currently going through testing in Israel.
What is it eactly?
It’s traffic light support, in which traffic lights and stop signs are pinpointed on the map during navigation.
This helps drivers anticipate intersections and plan ahead, particularly with regards to lane changes.
Only a few traffic lights would be shown to avoid clutter – more would appear whilst browsing through the map.

But as any proud Google Maps user will tell you, this feature has been available on that app since 2022.
So that begs the question – why does this matter and why would it make a difference in the ongoing rivalry between the two apps?
Well, it’s generally judged that Google Maps has the advantage over its competitor, due to such features like live fuel prices, and EV charger availability.

There is reason to believe that Waze bringing in the traffic light feature might help close a perceived gap between the two.
Only time will tell if it actually works or not.
Google Maps versus Waze – the ongoing debate
This is up there with all the all-time greats when it comes to rivalries.
Coca-Cola and Pepsi have nothing on this.
But who prefers what?
Even our very own Alex Hirschi – aka Supercar Blondie herself – has waded into the debate.

For her, there was one clear winner.
A tech editor over at Zdnet even put the two apps up against each other in a head-to-head comparison.
When drivers were asked to vote on their favorite over on Reddit, they gave one clear answer.
And bear in mind, this is all before we even factor Apple Maps into the debate.
All we’ll say is – different strokes for different folks.
Try each of the apps out at your discretion and see which one you prefer.
