The G63 AMG stands as a rare example of a Mercedes-Benz that still feels like a vault, maintaining its status as the definitive G-Class luxury SUV.

Many observers dismiss this vehicle as a high-fashion accessory for city streets rather than a serious tool for the road.

I found that the cabin materials and leather quality match the standards of an S-Class while providing a commanding view from the driver’s seat.

The reality of living with this machine reveals several surprising quirks that change the way you look at modern automotive engineering.

The G63 AMG mechanical reality

The door of a G63 AMG doesn’t just close. It slams with a heavy, metallic click identical to the original G-Class made for military use.

While many modern brands use loosely based heritage designs, Mercedes-Benz kept the exposed hinges and the exact door-slam sound that has existed for decades.

It’s refreshing that when the car starts, the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 comes to life with a rumble that proves it is one of the best engines the brand has ever produced.

This handcrafted powerplant delivers 585hp, pushing the massive frame from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds.

The interior is a disciplined mix of luxury and utility where the three locking differential buttons take center stage.

These are not just for decoration, as they control a complex off-road system including low-range gearing and a ‘transparent hood’ camera function.

I found that while the average owner may never leave the tarmac, knowing the car can literally drive up a mountain provides a unique sense of confidence.

However, the tall structure and AMG Active Ride Control suspension create a few driving quirks.

Under heavy acceleration, the G63 AMG has a tendency to jump or lean as it flexes its muscles, and the steering occasionally requires a firm hand to maintain a straight line.

It feels almost comical to find a full suite of driver assistance technology in a machine that looks like it belongs on a 1970s battlefield.

However, having features like adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and active brake assist in a car this powerful is a very welcome addition.

It turned what could be a physically demanding commute into a much more relaxed experience, as the car more than handled the tedious stop-and-go tasks of modern traffic.

While you probably wouldn’t buy a 585hp off-roader to let it steer itself on the highway, those features make living with such a beast significantly less of a chore.

Daily life with a G-Class Icon

From a practicality standpoint, the G63 AMG is surprisingly accommodating for daily errands despite its aging structural architecture.

Even for a driver well over six feet tall, there was ample room for full-sized adults in the back, complete with dedicated climate controls and Nappa leather seating.

The boot is on a sideways hinge, which is charming in its own way, though it requires careful planning if parking near a wall.

One minor frustration was that the rear seats do not fold completely flat, leaving a hump that can make sliding long items a bit of a chore.

I felt like I was grasping at straws with this criticism, as it’s a small price to pay for such an iconic form factor.

Despite those small gripes, the G63 AMG offers all the expected high-end features like active lane-keeping, adaptive cruise control, and seat massaging.

It manages to be both a rugged off-roader and a high-end racing machine, effectively offering the best of both worlds.

The iconic silhouette provides a heritage feel that distinguishes it from almost anything else on the road today.

While the G-Class is a significant financial commitment, its mechanical honesty is something that modern digital gadgets cannot replace.

It remains the anchor for the entire Mercedes-Benz reputation, proving that true quality is built to outlast the latest trends.
